Katrina: was it really a race issue?

When Dean stated, "race, age, and class were primary factors in who suffered and died as a result of Hurricane Katrina," I feel that he was only partially correct. The city of New Orleans issued a warning to all of the people state wide and warned everyone of what might be the impact of Katrina. I do not feel that race was an issue because the warning was not just for certain people, it pertained to everyone. Though race did not seem to be an obvious issue in my mind, I do agree with the idea that age and class could've had a huge affect on the evacuation of the city. The poor or homeless society that we have in every one of our large cities do not own cars and did not have the money to just get up and leave. Though I heard that public transportation made an effort to transport as many people out of the city as possible (buses), many could not even attempt to find their way out.

The poor and homeless people in New Orleans were of many different races, and this may have made it, in some peoples minds, a racial issue becuase the numbers may show that caucasion people are the wealthier people.  Of which many got out.  But if the tables were turned and more of caucasion poeple were homeless than others of different races, then the poor people who just couldnt afford to get out still wouldnt have. Lets not forget that many people in New Orleans were secluded to there societies and either decided that they did not take these warnings seriously or they felt they could wait the storm out. So even some people that were informed didnt want to. (people from all classes) The attempt was made for everyone, weather they could, couldnt, or didnt want to leave New Orleans.
